Share The Road Week

October 29th - November 2nd

The Office of Sustainability will be hosting a Share the Road Week, October 29- November 2, 2012. Share the Road is a student-led campaign to encourage bicyclists, motorists, and pedestrians to become more aware of each other and learn safety tips for the road. All students, faculty and staff are encouraged to sign the Share the Road pledge to make a commitment to using the roads safely and responsibly. Information tables will be set up outside the Union where anyone can come and sign the pledge and learn some quick tips about road safety. There will also be a raffle for prizes for whomever enters in by signing the pledge at the end of the week.

Mississippi law says:

  • Every person riding a bicycle has all of the rights and all of the duties as drivers of cars have
  • While passing bicyclists, a motorist must leave a safe distance of at least 3 feet between the vehicle and the bicyclist

Stop by at the table between 11am and 1pm every day of the week to get more information on road safety. Also attend the "Bike Maintanance Workshop" at 1pm on Thursday, November 1st at the Union Plaza to learn the basics of caring for your bike . The weeks's message will focus on raising awareness to:

Motorists

  1. Focus on driving
  2. Avoid talking or texting on cell phones and other distractions while driving
  3. Keep your eye on cyclists and pedestrians, as they have a right to use the roads
  4. Slow down

Pedestrians

  1. Cross in crosswalks
  2. Pedestrians have the right of way at crosswalks and intersections, unless a crossing guard is present
  3. Walk against traffic

Cyclists

  1. Bikes belong on the roads
  2. Ride with the flow of traffic
  3. Obey traffic laws- you’re a vehicle too
  4. Take the lane when necessary
