University Ave. Complete Streets Pop-up

The City of Oxford Pathways Commission and the UM Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee (BPAC) are collaborating to implement Oxford’s first-ever temporary complete streets pop-up project during the month of July. We successfully raised $4,000 to pay for the materials for this project! Thank you to everyone who made this happen. Check out the video of the project construction made by Jake Jenkins. Send us your feedback on the project by clicking here.

What’s next?

Volunteers, along with electronic traffic counters, will be collecting data during the week of July 13. We will compare this data (vehicle speed, # of pedestrians, # of cyclists on the road vs. on the sidewalk) to data collected prior to project implementation.

What will the project accomplish?

A section of University Ave. (between 5th St. & Grove Loop) will be temporarily transformed during the month of July to help better accommodate all users of the road. Project plans include the following retrofits:

  • The addition of two bike lanes
  • Reducing 4 travel lanes to 2 and the adding of 1 turn lane
  • The addition of 1 pedestrian island between the Ford Center and the Music Building

The goal of this project is to increase safety for bicyclists and pedestrians, while also reducing motor vehicle traffic speeds. The 85th percentile speed for vehicles on this section of University Ave. is 32mph – 12mph above the set speed limit of 20mph.
